One morning we took a little outing to this Park.
Federal forces, which were part of Gen. James B. McPherson's Army of the Tennesee, led a
diversionary attack across a field against Confederate defenses at the base of the
mountains on June 27, 1864.
The 2,888 acre park commemorates the sacrifices of those who fought or died in the
grueling four-month 1864 Atlanta Campaign. There were over 3,000 casualties at the
Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
In June, 1864 General William T. Sherman described the twin peaks of Kennesaw Mountain
as a scene too beautiful to be disturbed by the horrors of war.
