Kelly had a half day off work on Good Friday & asked if I wanted to go
for a drive down to Kitt Peak, so we did! We drove down to Maricopa &
off on some other back roads that Kelly had driven when he worked for
UAP. It was really quite nice to be out driving through & viewing the
countryside again. I saw alot of new areas I've never seen before. Kelly
said we were driving through reservation land & this reservation extended
clear down to the border of Mexico. I said, well no wonder were seeing alot
of Border Patrol vehicles infact in the end we counted at least 20!!! That's
more than we saw driving backroads on our way back from Colonia Juarez
our last trip down there. And these vehicles we counted just between Maricopa and Tucson!! I'd say they're trying to do there job!!!
I guess that area is where alot of illegals try to come through. That was amazing!
Well ..... that is I was quite enjoying myself until we arrived at the foot of the
mountain to Kitt Peak & noticed the sign said 35 mins. til closing time &
Kelly freaked me out driving fast around all the curves to the top of the
Mountain so we'd have time to see something before they closed. Whew!!!
So much for our good planning. At least we got to see abit & it wasn't closed
when we got there, that would of been bad. The wind was really blowing
as you can tell & it was pretty cool up there 7,000 ft. They do have a picnic
area but it was closed because of fire hazard, & a little visitor's center & they
do give 2 or 3 tours a day.
Celebrating 50 Years!! Kitt Peak was selected in 1958 as the site for a National
Observatory from a survey that included more than 150 mountain ranges across the United States. Located on land of the Tohono O'odham Nation in the
Sonoran Desert about 52 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. Kitt Peak today
is home to the world's largest collection of optical telescopes under desert skies that continue to be some of the finest in the world for astronomical observations. Over 500 visiting astronomers from throughout the United
States & many foreign countries use these facilities to carry out their research
in a typical year. Well I learned alot, I guess I had it all wrong in my mind
thinking Kitt Peak was on Mount Lemon & East of Tucson. I guess it was
about time I learned something more about the state I live in. Ha!
Afterwards we drove down to Old Tucson & out for Mexican Food to finish
off our day! I like my field trips! Just had to do it, even if it made a very
crammed week-end. How often does your husband get off work early & ask if you want to go for a drive?? We had a Stake B.B.Q. on Saturday, It was Easter
Sunday, Family get-together & Baby Shower for Michelle & birthdays &
Easter Egg Hunt for the grandkids. And I was trying to finish off
crocheting around some burp clothes. Randi, I almost called you because
I couldn't remember the pattern I use to use crocheting around pillow-
cases when I was a teenager. I ended up doing a simpler pattern, but I
noticed you had crocheted some cute angels I'd seen on your blog awhile
back. Anyway we made it through. And that's a rap for now.
